Apiary Protecting Biodiversity

Bees are the unsung heroes of our ecosystem, playing an indispensable role as pollinators for countless plants that feed both humans and wildlife. Unfortunately, their populations are under serious threat from habitat destruction, pesticide use, and climate change—pressures that were further worsened by the devastation of Hurricanes Irma and Maria. These storms not only destroyed critical habitats but also disrupted local ecosystems, creating long-term challenges for biodiversity and food security. At Para la Naturaleza, we recognize the importance of addressing these threats head-on to safeguard our environment and the future of our planet. 

That’s why we’re excited to announce the establishment of a new apiary at Cañón San Cristóbal in Barranquitas, made possible by the generous support of the Park Foundation. This initiative builds on the success of our first apiary at Hacienda La Esperanza in Manatí, which became a beacon of community engagement and education following the hurricanes in 2017. Students and volunteers have participated in hands-on workshops, learning about the crucial role of bees in maintaining the health of ecosystems. Their growing involvement has helped strengthen community bonds and heightened awareness of conservation efforts. 

The new apiary in Barranquitas will serve as a living laboratory, offering educational opportunities for students, volunteers, and local beekeepers. With 168 native trees newly planted and fresh grass added to support a flourishing environment, this project is a step toward creating a sustainable future. Looking ahead, we are committed to establishing more apiaries across our network of protected natural areas, furthering our mission of environmental conservation and education.
