Cañón San Cristóbal: A Living Model of Conservation
Thanks to the generous support of the Park Foundation, the Cañón San Cristóbal Apiary Project in Barranquitas is advancing as a vital hub for pollinator conservation, habitat restoration, and community engagement. This is the second educational apiary managed by Para la Naturaleza, building on the success of our first site at Hacienda La Esperanza in Manatí.
Our team and volunteers successfully rescued and are now caring for 15 bee colonies. The apiary has capacity for 27 colonies, and the most recent inspection confirmed that the hives are healthy and thriving. Volunteer participation has been essential to their ongoing maintenance, reinforcing our commitment to collaborative, community-driven conservation.
Additional milestones included planting 168 native trees—rocio (Erythroxylon brevipes) and rama menuda (Myrcia splendens). With regular maintenance and monitoring we are proud to report a 100% survival rate. These trees will provide critical forage and habitat for pollinators while enriching the ecological health of Cañón San Cristóbal.
The Cañón San Cristóbal Apiary is poised to become a powerful model for conservation and education, connecting people, pollinators, and nature in meaningful ways.
